The day care centre for special needs individuals is now under planning and research in the residential area of Glen View 3 High-glen district Harare.A group of women who have children who lack fully developed capacity for learning have united to form a day care centre/vocational training centre that takes care of the children who are under developed. The centre is called Tovimbanashe Centre(We Believe in God) and it was discovered early 2011.The main thrust for the day care centre is to cater and help those children who are under developed especially those who come from a poor background. They also hold workshops with other parents who have special children to help them in taking care of their children.
The first time i discovered of this group of women was when they visited at my school.Part of their day to day job is vist schools and offices networking and having discussions with people and introducing and letting the public know what they are all about. They also stage live on stage dramas that give a clear picture on what they are all about and were they are coming from. The dramas and acts help people recognize the difficulties and hardships being faced by the special needs individuals and the hardships also being faced by the parents especially the mother who is from a poor background in an African society. They have a lot of difficulties and problems they are facing and they stated some as not having the proper materials and resources to carry out this endevour and task. They do not have a proper venue or office for this centre so they are using the old farm house that is delapdated. They also said that they have tried to appeal to the government and it seems as if that the the government is not in support of them and the only hope they have is the public.
They believe in teaching the children with love and care and not harshness and the with the rod and staff as in the African community. The other job they are doing is holding campaigns and calling upon other parents who have their children who are special to come out in the open and join heads with them and that these parents should not hide their children from the world but give the children the right and opportunity to learning.
They talked about the difficulties that are being faced by the women who give birth to these special children saying that most of the women are left by their husbands describing it as an abomination in the community. They also said that even if a family is intact it is only the mother who takes care of the child and other family members choose to neglect the child care and this gives the mothers mind unrest in thinking that when they die it means that the special child would remain behind and have no one to care for them. There is also another problem that when parents give birth to a special child they then build up and they find it hard to try and have another child because they fear of the worst. In some cases doctors are not comforting and sympathetic about situations like these.
Some of the group members identified themselves as Mrs Chitsva who is a voluntary worker and Mrs Florence Kabayadondo and they have called upon anyone who is willing to support them with anything or even mental support to contact them on these phone numbers +263 777 028 404 and the other contact number is +263 733 970 385.
